How to Stay Motivated Throughout the School Year as an International Student

We know that burnout is a real issue that everyone struggles with. It might be even harder to deal with it when you’re thousands of miles away from home, but it’s still possible to work through it and continue to excel in and out of school. Here are some ways that you can keep yourself in check and stay motivated through the school year.

Study with friends

One of the best ways to continue a good studying habit, even when you don’t feel like doing anything, is getting a study buddy. This person can be your friend, classmate, or anyone who also wants to maintain a healthy study habit and reach their personal goals. Not only will you have someone to talk to about school, you and your friend can also keep each other motivated throughout the school year. You can keep track of each other’s progress and make sure that each of you are held accountable for completion of tasks and goals.

Change your work scenery

On some days you might feel like studying in your dorm, while on other days, the library might be the better option. If you’re getting bored of the traditional workplaces then you can consider going to a cafe to get your work done. Change it up whenever you feel necessary in order to stay productive and motivated.

Keep a healthy and balanced diet

The first step to staying motivated and actively working toward your goals is keeping your body healthy and happy. You have to feed yourself nutritious foods on time everyday, in order to boost your productivity. If you can’t keep your body running on nutrition then you can’t expect it to carry you to the finish line.

Sleep and exercise

Similar to eating healthy on a daily basis, exercising and sleeping are crucial to staying productive and motivated. A lack of sleep often leads to lower energy levels and an exercise deficiency can cause stress to build up as well as moodiness. Although it is difficult, sleeping and exercising is so important and you should try your best to get a sufficient amount of it.

Call home and talk to friends

Whenever you’re feeling tired and defeated, you should talk about it with your family and friends. Not only will you get to let your emotions out through talking to your loved ones, you’ll most likely be reminded of why you embarked on your goals to begin with which will propel you forward.

Reflect on your goals and aspirations

One way to keep yourself going through the school year is by reminding yourself of your goals and aspirations. You’ll most likely feel more driven to get to where you want to be. Moreover, the act of reflecting can help you feel more relaxed and focused on your goals.

Stay organized and plan your days

An easy way to keep yourself on track toward your goals is to stay organized by knowing what you need to do day-to-day. It’s as easy as putting events on your Google Calendar and creating a master class assignments list on Microsoft Excel. You can also get a planner to make sure that you can keep up with your daily tasks.

Give yourself a break

Sometimes, all you need is a nap or a day off and that’s absolutely fine. You should know your own limitations, and learn how to respect it by giving your mind and body the rest it deserves. Learning to give yourself a break when necessary will definitely help you in the long run.
