Should International Students Study Abroad?

Many international students have doubts about studying abroad and even dismiss the idea of it because they don’t see the benefits of studying abroad while they’re already abroad. However, there are many reasons why one should consider studying abroad, outside of the US, even if they’re already from another country. In this article, we will go through all the reasons why international students should consider studying abroad even if they’re already studying outside of their home country.

The “I’m already studying abroad” argument

International students often bring up the fact that they’re already studying abroad as the classic argument to why they shouldn’t go study in another country for a semester or year. Although it is a valid argument against studying abroad, it also ultimately inhibits personal growth and open-mindedness. There are so many benefits to studying abroad, as we will outline in this article, but you should first put away the argument that you can’t study abroad because you’re already studying abroad so that you can fully understand the advantages of studying away for a semester or two.

Why study abroad while you’re abroad?

There are a myriad of reasons why students should take the opportunity to study abroad. We will be going deeper into each reason to study abroad later on, but the main benefits of studying abroad is to nurture personal as well as professional growth, travel to better understand the world, and find new opportunities along with interests.

Personal development

The most beneficial part of studying abroad is personal development. By going abroad for a semester or so, you will get to nurture your personal growth and understanding of the world. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in an entirely new environment and gain priceless experiences. In the long run, being able to live in a new country and learn about a completely different culture will allow you to have a better global perspective and improve yourself, whether it be through conscious actions or unconscious shifts in behaviors.

Professional development

Other than self-development, studying abroad can also be helpful in your professional growth. You may be able to network with people within that country and find work opportunities there. Being abroad can also steer you in a different career direction by showing you a variety of work options, so you can make the right decision for yourself in terms of your professional life.

Travel and see the world

Studying abroad is a traveling opportunity as you get to explore a completely different country and maybe even visit other countries that are nearby. So, you will most likely get to see more than just one place and have fun exploring. Traveling is a great way to spend your time in college as you won’t be able to travel as much once you have a full-time job.

Find new interests

An indirect benefit of studying abroad is that you’ll get to explore new interests and hobbies. This is due to the fact that you will be opening your eyes to all kinds of cultures and exploring local interests, which in turn can become your new favorite thing.

Take a chance and go on a new adventure!

Even though you’re technically already studying abroad, you should never dismiss the idea of studying away from your origin campus as it can be an insightful part of your education. There are so many benefits to studying abroad, so you should definitely take some time to think about it before completely saying no to the idea.
