What Clubs Should You Join?

Extracurriculars are a crucial part of every student’s college experience as they are one of the easiest ways to get involved on campus and learn more about a particular subject. Every university has their own selection of clubs and the variety might be overwhelming at first, which is why we wanted to help you figure out what kind of clubs are best for you!

What are school clubs?

School clubs are essentially student-led organizations that are associated with a university’s school or department. They are funded and approved by the university, but fully run by students who are on the club’s executive board. Most of the time, anyone can join the club by attending general meetings, but some clubs have flagship programs which students must apply to be a part of as it is more rigorous.

What are you interested in?

Before you explore clubs at your school, really think about what you are interested in. Make a list of topics that you want to learn more about, so that you’ll know what to prioritize.

What types of clubs are there?

There is a variety of clubs at most universities, but the main types are as follows:

  1. Academic
  2. Social justice
  3. Media & publication
  4. Sports & recreation
  5. Cultural
  6. Religious & spiritual
  7. Theater & arts
  8. Community service
  9. Political

Explore your university’s offering

Before the start of the semester, you should take some time to look through your university’s list of clubs online so that you’ll know what you might be interested in ahead of time. You can also sign up for different clubs’ mailing lists so that you’ll always be in the know. Usually, at the beginning of each semester, the university will host a club fair so that new students can see the wide range of clubs on campus. You should definitely attend it if you can, so that you can find out what each club is like in person. Find out when their general meetings are each week and go to them to see whether or not you want to join the club.

What do you want out of the club?

Take the time to think about your purpose of joining a particular club. Do you want academic resources, career opportunities, or a community of friends? Each club offers different things, so take the time to really do your research in order to join the right clubs for you.

Talk to the people in the club

One of the best ways to figure out if a certain club is the right fit for you is to talk to the people who are already in the club. In particular, students on the club’s board can give more insight into what the club is like overall.

How many clubs should you join?

There is no singular perfect number of clubs for everyone. One of the things that you have to keep in mind is how involved you want to be for each club. Don’t spread yourself too thin and join too many clubs as it can become difficult for you to balance properly along with school work and a social life. Go to as many clubs as you can during the first two weeks of school to figure out what you want to seriously join, and then focus on just a few.
